In this game, you need to expertly guide Watergirl, who can traverse water but is harmed by fire, and Fireboy, who can walk through fire but must avoid water. The goal is to lead both characters to their respective portals, Fireboy to red portals and Watergirl to blue portals, while simultaneously solving puzzles that involve redirecting light and activating platforms. Light plays a critical role in gameplay. You must manipulate boxes equipped with mirrors to redirect beams of light toward light detectors, which, when activated, reveal vital platforms to traverse. The challenge escalates as you must also collect gems scattered throughout the levels. Watergirl is tasked with securing blue gems, while Fireboy collects red ones.

Simultaneously Designed Levels: In these 7 levels, you must control Fireboy and Watergirl simultaneously, demanding a higher level of coordination and strategic planning. These levels test your multitasking skills and your ability to think critically about each character's path in tandem.
White Diamond Levels: The 10 white diamond levels focus on collecting a specific white diamond. These levels often incorporate additional challenges that require you to work together to access the diamond while navigating the existing puzzles.
Dark Levels: The 7 dark levels present a unique twist, as they lack light sources and collectible diamonds. In these levels, you must rely on their understanding of the game mechanics to guide Fireboy and Watergirl through the shadows.
